What do we need to declare our independence from today? Ann Levy of Painesville Township answers

234 years ago, the founding fathers of America signed a statement that said those living in the 13 colonies of America were declaring their independence from Britain. At the heart of the intention was this second sentence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Today, on America’s birthday, we ask “Now what?”

Here are the basics as I learned them.
Each American needs an elected official they can trust. That official needs to look out for the interests of the people who elected them, and only those interests.
The concept of a representative government needs to be a priority for each and every American. A representative government needs regular attention, not just when crises occur. A truly representative government gives responsibility to both “sides” — to the ones being represented as well as to the ones who are the representatives.
I feel that when those responsibilities are met on both sides, the government will be most effective.
I think solutions to other problems — immigration, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, health care, the economy, and the many others facing America right now — will be more easily reached if the above is true.
